ASSOCIATE DEAN OF DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION Brown University’s Graduate School invites applications for an Associate Dean of Diversity and Inclusion. Brown Graduate School is known for its supportive and inclusive student experience, as evidenced by enrollment, retention, and placement statistics, and by measures of student experience for students from underrepresented backgrounds. The Associate Dean of Diversity and Inclusion will have broad oversight of ongoing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and the opportunity to envision and implement new processes, initiatives, and measurable actions leading toward greater diversity, equity, and inclusion in the Graduate School. The Associate Dean of Diversity and Inclusion, a core member of the Graduate School leadership team, provides vision, direction, and coordination for the Graduate School to strengthen the overall excellence of graduate education at Brown through strategic engagement in diversity and inclusion initiatives. The Associate Dean’s primary responsibility is to be the central person providing leadership on the creation, implementation, and management of initiatives, programs, and policies that improve the recruitment, retention, inclusion, and success of graduate students from underrepresented backgrounds. The Associate Dean’s efforts encompass supporting graduate students from historically underrepresented backgrounds, including students who identify as Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC); students from groups marginalized with respect to gender and sexual orientation; first-generation college students; and other forms of diversity. The Associate Dean will work with and supervise additional staff to support these efforts. This work includes partnering with doctoral and Master’s departments, programs and divisions, other administrative offices, faculty, and students to support the University’s efforts in recruitment, advising and mentoring, and community-building in support of fostering diversity and inclusion in the graduate student body. The Associate Dean will be responsible for institutionalizing change and best practices in diversity in graduate education across all programs and departments. Accordingly, the Associate Dean will be expected to implement measurable objectives and to document outcomes that align with the Graduate School and University’s vision for change. Major Responsibilities: - Leads strategic planning and initiatives in support of diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in graduate student recruitment, training, experience, and retention.
- Develops, implements, and manages programming and other initiatives that are critical for student retention and success to create a positive and supportive climate and community for graduate students from underrepresented backgrounds.
- Identifies, develops, implements, and assesses strategies in the area of the recruitment of graduate students from underrepresented backgrounds in doctoral and Master’s programs across all disciplines of graduate study at Brown.
- Serves as a core member of the Graduate School’s leadership team to advance the ongoing efforts of the Graduate School’s Departmental Diversity and Inclusion Action plan.
